Are you moving house? Here is what you need to know..

Moving houses can be a daunting task. Ask me. I have moved four times in the past 5 years. It is crazy. But over the times I have moved, I have learned quite a few tips and tricks. The next time we move, I am definitely hiring house movers because even the thought of packing boxes all over again gives me the angry feels. But having said that, being a renter for the past five years, I have mastered the art of moving and it has saved me so much time and energy that I can use on other relevant things in my life.

So here are the top few tips that I have learned over the years:

1. Pack all the things that you won't need immediately.

This has been a lifesaver. When you start packing things that either you don't need at that time or you won't need immediately, it gives you so much peace of mind that certain things are packed. Things like fancy crockery, seasonal clothes and shoes, frames, books and other decorative items. Make sure that you label every box. Another super tip for packing books is using vacuum bags. Putting it in boxes might be really heavy to heave the box so you can pack them in vacuum bags and put them in different boxes so as to space them out and it's easier for you to find them when you label boxes.

2. If you haven't used it for a year, you probably won't anytime soon enough.

The amount of clothes that I have collected over the past few years is alarming. But half the things I don't even wear. Gaining weight has been daunting so I tend to collect clothes that are too tight for me or too lose for me. If you are collecting clothes that you will wear once you lose the weight, don't! You can always buy more of those clothes. Obviously, there are clothes that are timeless or have memories attached to it. I still have an embroidered coat that I wore on my sister's engagement about 12 years ago! I still have blouses that I got 5 years ago on our honeymoon because they have memories attached. But if there are things that you haven't worn in a year, bag them up and give them to charity! You will feel so much calmer after decluttering even the crockery that you haven't used in ages. Make sure that you get rid of tupperwear that is showing signs of wearing out.

3. Batch cook for the moving days.

Usually, people get takeaways for when they are moving. Although that is an easy thing to do but when you are moving and also trying to save money, it becomes increasingly expensive. So batch cooking before I start packing is something that has helped me so so much. On days when I was busy packing and taking care of my son, to defrost a home cooked meal was a blessing in disguise. To not worry about what to make for dinner or what to order and to handle the tantrums of kids, it's easier to have something you can rely on and pack for the move without any worry.

4. Pack each room at a time instead of taking everything out all at one time.

Once you have packed all the things that you won't need right away, its best to tackle one room at a time. Disassemble the furniture one by one and pack their metals in small ziplock bags with labels. And then start packing all the clothes, shoes and other things. Make sure that you do the kitchen last because you will be looking for a spoon all night long. I know plastic spoons and plates are easier but anything to save the environment right? Once you pack each room one by one, it is easier for you to move as well. Like you can unpack the room that you have packed first and that way, you can make your life easier and less stress-free.

5. Make sure that you make a list of all the things to be done that day.

Another thing that will make your moving easy is making a list of all the things that need to be done on that one particular day. It will also mean that you are not all over the place and you can also divide the tasks between you and your family. Also, make sure that the list is small. List down a maximum of 3-4 things and not more. I have come to realise that if I make a list of 10 things, either I won't do all of them or just waste time and do none of them at all. If you have a small list, you have fewer tasks to get through and that means you can relax a little bit to take on the next day with a bang!

6. Hire movers.

Honestly, over the past few years, I have realised that hiring movers is an easy thing to do. I mean obviously all the above mentioned will bring peace of mind, but to have someone do the daunting job, is the best thing ever. You can get quotes from moving companies and have a removal van come to your house to do the entire move for you. It gives you so much time to do other things and focus more on kids and if you are a working mum, then definitely, it gives you the freedom to focus on your work as well.

Hope these tips help you out and give you the ease that you deserve!
